The first year, this plant is a small rosette. The second year, it grows in height and flowers. Balduina angustifolia is endemic to the southeastern coastal plain from Mississippi to Georgia with most of its range being within Florida (BONAP 2014). Casual wildflower bed, typically to the back as the flower stalks are tall.  We recommend treating this like a biennial.

Depending on who you ask, there are two laurel oaks in Florida.  Q. laurifolia (swamp laurel oak) and Q. hemisphaerica (Darlington oak, sand laurel oak).  The taxonomists don't agree, and it appears that the two are distinctively different in north Florida but very much alike in southern and south Florida. They are separated here because one is a wetland and floodplain plant, the other grows in dry uplands.  Some authors note that regardless of ID, they get planted without much regard for origin or drainage. Often grown as a specimen tree, fast growing.

This is a large tree best used in settings where its form can be appreciated. It is both a specimen tree and and shade tree.

This species is almost always coastal occupying only a strip along the coastline and not entire counties. Wildflower garden or tall-growing groundcover. Forms mounds that are typically wider than tall. Cut back to ground after flowering.

The bloom period is relatively long - lasting from early spring, well into fall. Wildflower garden.

Sprawling. Best used as a wildflower.

Shrub for woodland edge or casual garden.

Flowers have yellow tepals but the inflorescence has abundant white hairs which provide an overall white aspect in the landscape. The species is named for its red roots and rhizomes. Feral hogs love this plant and will dig up extensive areas to get the roots.  The plant in turn recovers quickly and new plants come up from the fragmented rhisomes. Groundcover or mass planting in moist areas.

It is listed as Endangered by the State of Florida.  Please acquire only from reputable sources with appropriate permits. Smaller specimen tree, hedge plant, or small street tree.

The interesting flower shape reminded early settlers of someone standing in a pulpit. Retain if present. Interesting in a moist shade garden as its flowers form a small preacher in a pulpit.

Fruiting late in the fall, the fruits during the fall add substantial interest to a casual garden.  Baccharis glomerulifolia is similar in appearance and in potential cultural uses. Specimen plant in casual settings.  Also useful as a natural screen or buffer plant. Rain gardens or bioswales. The primary horticultural feature is the silvery, plume-like achenes which appear in the fall on female plants. The fruits can provide a white haze for several weeks in the fall.
