Interesting pink veined foliage, showy flowers. Often lies on its side with the flowers held somewhat above the rest of the plant. Has an extremely deep taproot.  Is notoriously difficult to transplant. Small specimen plant.

Makes a nice ground cover in semi-shady to shady areas.

Specimen plant for floodplain or mist settings.

Poisonous if ingested. Groundcover in open, dry, sandy sites especially on dunes and the upper fringes of beaches.

This species is in the Nettle Family and looks much like stinging nettle. However, it does not have stinging hairs. Ground cover in moist sites in casual settings. Very attractive when young, but becomes somewhat weedy and tall as it matures. Probably better suited for restoration than landscaping.

The various sources have conflicting opinions on the fruit and its uses. Specimen plant or wildlife planting for moist areas. Screen plant. Suggested by IFAS as a median planting or buffer planting for roadways.

Use as a natural hedge behind shorter plants.

Not salt tolerant of inundation by salty or brackish water. Low/no tolerance of salty wind or direct salt spray
